One man is in the custody of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers in Botwood following a standoff in the community.

With the incident resolved, the RCMP has lifted the public safety advisory.

Police say more detail on the incident will be available later today.

The central Newfoundland community witnessed a similar scenario in late July when a 43-year-old man was arrested after barricading himself inside a home with a weapon.

Earlier story:

Police are advising the public this hour of an “active public safety incident” ongoing in Botwood.

Access into the community via Twomey Drive is blocked, according to an urgent media advisory issued by the RCMP.

Police have confirmed the incident is a standoff with a man in Botwood who has barricaded himself in his home and will not come out. Police said they had responded to an earlier incident involving the man, who is believed to have access to a firearm.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jolene Garland also said police believe the man is alone inside the home.

Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP, Police Dog Services and firefighters are on scene working on bringing the situation to a resolution.

RCMP Emergency Response Team has also been dispatched.

Central Health requested that anyone with non-life-threatening needs for medical attention go to the Grand Falls Central Health Centre until this matter is resolved, as access to the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Centre is blocked. At this time, only emergencies will be permitted entry through the barricaded area.

RCMP also asked the public to be patient during this time and to obey the barricades or directions of any police officers or firefighters on scene.

The RCMP media advisory indicated police would provide further updates with a news release Thursday morning.
