ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A spokesperson with the City of Mount Pearl told The Telegram that its top beaurocrat, chief administrative officer Steve Kent, is still on a paid leave of absence.

Kent was placed on leave on Oct. 2, 2019.

According to a CBC News report in October, Kent was placed on the leave of absence because of an investigation into allegations about his workplace conduct, including allegations of mocking subordinates in front of other staff, berating workers verbally and making comments about job security that were perceived to be intimidating.

A city spokesperson told The Telegram that no one else is being paid to complete Kent’s duties in the interim; rather, the city clerk has since been appointed acting chief administrative officer.

The spokesperson said the total salary paid to Kent from Oct. 2, 2019 until April 25, 2020 (the current payroll cycle) is $122,672.52.

According to the spokesperson, the investigation is still active and the date of resolution is unknown.

Out of respect for his employer and his co-operation with the ongoing process, Kent declined The Telegram’s request for comment.

Kent became chief administrative officer of Mount Pearl in October 2017. He is also a former mayor of the city, as well as a former provincial cabinet minister and deputy premier.
