Structure fire on Alexander Street in St. John's

No injuries in second floor apartment blaze

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The St. John's Regional Fire Department made quick work of a house fire at 21 Alexander Street in St. John's Wednesday morning.

Platoon chief Dean Foley says smoke was coming from beneath the eaves when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Once inside, they found major damage to a second-floor bedroom.

There were no injuries and the first-floor apartment is vacant

First responders might have been even quicker in knocking down the blaze if the fire hydrant directly across the street weren't broken. Instead, they used a nearby hydrant at the bottom of the street and at the end of Angel Place.

A City of St. John's salt truck was called in to spread salt over the area to keep it from freezing.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating and securing the scene.
