ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A Suncor Energy employee is said to be in stable condition following an incident that happened Sunday afternoon, Dec. 29,  onboard the Terra Nova floating oil production storage and offloading unit or vessel.

According to information from Suncor, at about 4 p.m., the “team member,” fell from a ladder inside a tank while while conducting gas testing.

Onsite emergency services immediately responded to provide support.

The individual was transferred onshore by helicopter for further medical assessment.

“The safety of our employees is our top priority,” Suncor said in a prepared statement.

It went on to say the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) has been notified and that Suncor is investigating the cause of this incident.

A news release issued this afternoon by the C-NLOPB states that the incident was reported to them on Sunday evening. It said the injured employee was transferred to St. John’s by medevac on Sunday evening and is currently in the hospital under medical care.

An order to suspend production-related operations on the Terra Nova FPSO had been previously issued by the C-NLOPB on Dec. 19 in response to another issue.

"The task being undertaken by the injured worked was safety-focused and was not included in the scope of suspended activity," C-NLOPB's new release states.

"The C-NLOPB is reviewing this incident, along with others that have recently taken place on facilities operated by Suncor Energy in the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Area."

It stated that production-related operations remain suspended on the Terra Nova FPSO and will not resume until Suncor Energy has received approval from the C-NLOPB.
