Police officers were kept hopping, the lock-up was full and the desk sergeant must have had a busy shift after a hectic Sunday for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

The RNC’s morning report, containing calls deemed particularly noteworthy, had seven items, more than twice what is seen on most days.

Four off the calls resulted in charges of assault:

• Early Sunday, Operational Patrol Services (OPS) responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the centre-city area of St. John’s. The resulting investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Criminal Investigation Division and the RNC Forensic Identification section, saw a 63-year-old man charged with uttering threats, assault, and aggravated assault. He was transported to the lock-up and held for court. The victim was treated in hospital, but since been released.

• Early in the afternoon, OPS was called to the Cookstown Road area of St. John’s after the report an assault. As a result, a 46-year-old woman was charged with assault, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, uttering threats and breach of court orders. The woman was held to appear in court this morning.

• Within the next hour, OPS responded to two reports of domestic disturbances.

The first was in the central area of St. John’s. As a result of the complaint, a 47-year-old man was charged with assault and held at the lockup to appear before a judge this morning. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Just about 30 minutes later, officers were in Foxtrap Access Road area of Conception Bay South. That investigation led to a 30-year-old man being charged with assault and was held at the lockup to appear before a judge. The victim went to hospital as a precaution after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

• At about the same time of the C.B.S. incident, police were called to look into a report of mischief in the centre of the capital city. As a result, two men — a 22-year-old and a 20-year-old — were charged with theft, property damage, and breaches of court orders, and held for court.

• Still in the afternoon, the police investigation of a report of someone brandishing a firearm while in a vehicle on Kenmount Road in St. John’s. The vehicle was located and a 20-year-old man is facing charges for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and using a firearm or imitation during the commission of an offence. He was released to appear in court at a later date.

The last entry in the report was actually from the early hours of Monday, when RNC officers answered to a report of a male looking into vehicles in the downtown St. John’s.. A witness was able to identify the suspect, a 38-year-old male, who turned out to be on a court-ordered curfew and, as a result, was in breach. He was located after a brief search and found to be in possession of stolen property. The suspect was charged with two breaches of a court order and one count of possession of property obtained by crime. He, too, was brought to the lockup for court in the morning.
