The incident happened at about 3 a.m. at the intersection of the Torbay bypass and Indian Meal Line. The front of the SUV was completely destroyed and the driver was taken to hospital with undetermined but apparently non life-threatening injuries.
The Outer Ring road and Topsail Road in Paradise were also ice covered and slippery forcing drivers to reduce speeds.
The RCMP issued slippery road warnings at the same time for the Cape Shore Hwy/Route 100 as well as the Trans-Canada highway from Whitbourne to Little Harbour East and the area of Salmonier Line. They were also asking people to stay off the roads unless necessary until the provincial department of highways resumed operations.
The Holyrood volunteer fire department also responded to an accident on the TCH just after 3 a.m. and Tweeted a report of black ice and 'skating rink'-like conditions in the area. No information was available on injuries.
The Torbay bypass, Outer Ring, Topsail Road in Paradise and the highways covered by the RCMP advisory are the responsibility of the provincial Transportation and Works department.
