Andrew Warren of Marystown was approximately three/four car lengths behind Kevin Chaulk and Kent Stanway, of 2IntentsRacing, when the car driven by Chaulk appeared to hit a pole on the shoulder of the road causing it to flip and land bottom up in the road.
“I was the driver directly behind their car,” Warren told The Southern Gazette on Thursday, Sept. 20.
“I assisted the navigator out of the car then proceeded to calm the driver and convince him to sit and let me wash the sand and glass from his eyes and face.”
Later that day Chaulk used social media to thank Warren for his assistance while they waited for Targa’s Emergency Response Team to respond.
“I will say this a huge, huge thank you to Andrew Warren for being there and helping us out, making sure we were okay and flushing the sand out of our eyes and anything we asked…” he said in a Facebook post on Sept. 16
Warren told The Gazette that when he exited his vehicle to help, “I had full trust in the safety measures in place and the response teams put in place by Targa.
“They had the stage secured, race stopped and (the) drivers on the way to the hospital in less than three minutes, which is amazing.”
He added the drivers and navigators taking part in the event are all trained in accident response and first aid as well.
“So I had no fear at all,” he said. “I was proud of the job done by everyone involved and I was so glad to see my two pals walk away from a real nail biter.”
