TERRA NOVA NATIONAL PARK, NL – Terra Nova National Park started welcoming visitors for the 2018 season today, May 17.

To celebrate the park’s recent designation as the first Dark Sky Preserve in Newfoundland and Labrador, a pair of events have been planned.

On Friday evening, May 18, Parks Canada will host a special Dark Sky Preserve launch event at the Newman Sound Activity Centre. The event will include a night sky observation session hosted by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. It begins at 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, May 19, the Royal Astronomical Society and Parks Canada will jointly host solar viewing sessions at Sandy Pond and dark sky-themed activities for visitors of all ages at the visitor centre in Saltons.

Visitors to all Parks Canada sites are encouraged to plan their trip in advance to make the most of their experience.

Discovery Passes and make camping reservations online by visiting the Parks Canada’s website at http://www.pc.gc.ca/en. Parks Canada’s popular mobile app is also available for download.

Campsites and oTENTiks at the Terra Nova National Park’s Newman Sound campground and in the backcountry opened on May 16. The Malady Head campground opens on June 13.
