The Newfoundland and Labrador Historical Society Heritage Award for 2020 will be awarded posthumously to the late Larry Dohey, it was announced Thursday.
Dohey, a well-known archivist and researcher, and director of programming and public engagement at The Rooms, died last August at age 59.
The award will be presented on Monday, Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m. during a ceremony hosted by Lt.-Gov. Judy Foote at Government House. Dohey’s husband, Ian Martin, will accept the award on his behalf.
A news release notes the heritage award is presented to a person or persons who has contributed significantly to the preservation and/or dissemination of the written record of the history of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Larry was past-president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Historical Society and contributed to the preservation of NL history and heritage in immeasurable ways,” reads a statement made by the Newfoundland and Labrador Historical Society at the time of Dohey’s death.
“He was knowledgeable, charismatic, and passionate about Newfoundland and Labrador history and heritage, and he was a connector — connecting people to each other based on his knowledge of their common historical interests and research pursuits.”
Since 1976, the Newfoundland and Labrador Historical Society has honoured 37 people in the province with the heritage award.
Guests on Monday will include family, friends, directors of The Rooms, past and present board members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Historical Society, and members of the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives.
