The province’s top medical officer has been named by the College of Family Physicians of Canada as this year’s Family Physician of the Year for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald practised family medicine in the province for 20 years before becoming involved in public health. Since being appointed acting chief medical officer of health in September 2019, she’s taken the leading role in guiding Newfoundland and Labrador’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The college said Fitzgerald is proud to have been born in Trinity, Bonavista Bay, which she says is “famous for being the Trinity that’s not famous.”
She lives in Mount Pearl with her husband and has three children pursuing post-secondary studies.
“The Department of Health and Community Services is extremely proud of Dr. Fitzgerald,” Health Minister John Haggie said in a statement last week.
“This is a well-deserved recognition for our chief medical officer of health. Her dedication to her profession and to the people of this province is truly commendable.”
