CARBONEAR, N.L. — The Town of Carbonear is gathering data it hopes will guide the municipality on how to best implement traffic calming measures.

Public works director Brian O’Grady discussed where the town has been collecting information of late and where it plans to next. One set up remains in place by the schools on Valley Road, with a second placed in Crocker’s Cove. He said plans are in place to move this one to the north end of the beach not too far from the municipal building. This will give the town data on speeds people are travelling at as they enter downtown Carbonear.

“It’s quite fast going in around by the Stone Jug, so we want to collect some data there,” O’Grady said.

Beyond that, the public works director said he was open to getting suggestions from other council members on spots where the town should collect data to help inform a traffic calming policy.

“Basically, what we do is program in (and) create a file for that area, and we collect the data over a period of four, six or eight weeks, and we can download it into an Excel spreadsheet and we can see maximum speeds, average speeds, the number of vehicles and that sort of thing,” O’Grady said.

Coun. Danielle Doyle, chair of the development committee, brought up concerns expressed to her by developers connected to recent activity near the Canadian Tire property about speeds along Powell Drive.

“They had some safety concerns there,” she said.

The committee has not started reviewing the data and will only begin to do so once it believes everything it needs is collected.
