A man and a woman died after a boating accident Tuesday near Rigolet, Labrador.
Just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, Rigolet RCMP received a report of a boat taking on water in Long Point, approximately 30 km outside of Rigolet. The 18-foot aluminum boat was carrying four people from Rigolet including a man, a woman and two teenaged girls.
Police contacted Rigolet Ground Search and Rescue and engaged the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax for assistance. A number of boats and aircraft were deployed through the JRCC.
Shortly before 7 p.m., the two teenage girls, who were wearing lifejackets, were located by Rigolet Ground Search and Rescue. They were seated on top of the overturned boat and reported being cold. The girls were taken to a local cabin to warm up and later brought to the Rigolet clinic where they were treated and released.
At approximately 9 p.m., Rigolet Ground Search and Rescue located and recovered the 34-year-old man who was deceased in the water.
Just after 5 a.m. Wednesday, the 27-year-old woman was observed in the water by a Cormorant helicopter and her body was recovered by a Canadian Coast Guard vessel.
Neither were wearing a lifejacket.
