ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Two people were seriously injured during a house fire in St. John’s early Sunday morning.

The two victims were found outside the burning home as firefighters from the St. John’s Regional fire department arrived on scene at 294 Newfoundland Drive.

Acting platoon chief Paul Grandy said they responded to the blaze at about 1:30 a.m. after receiving multiple calls and arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and flame coming from the home. He said the two victims were taken to hospital as firefighters from four stations battled the fire.

When the Telegram arrived, heavy smoke was pouring from the structure and flames could be seen coming from the right side and eaves of the home. A ladder truck was also used to get personnel to the roof to cut ventilation holes.

Two other people who lived in a basement apartment of the house escaped unharmed.

No information was available as to what may have started the fire which caused extensive damage to the home.

The RNC is investigating.
