Two collisions on a snow-covered and slippery Trans-Canada highway at about 5 p.m. New Year’s Day caused a huge two kilometer backup of traffic as people made their way back to St. John’s after a long holiday weekend. One woman was taken to hospital following a rear-end collision in the eastbound lane between Soldiers Pond and Butterpot Park. One car had to be towed from the scene but the vehicle that was rear-ended could be driven from the area. The woman only suffered minor injuries. Just a hundred meters away, a second vehicle had left the road and gone into the woods over an embankment. There were no injuries in the incident but a tow-truck had to be used to remove the pickup from the scene.
