ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — An overnight fire during blizzard conditions proved a hard night for firefighters in St. John’s.

The fire on Groves Road, which occurred after midnight, extensively damaged the home, said St. John’s Regional Fire Department platoon chief Bob Hiscock.

Hiscock said the crews, which finished their rotation Monday morning, had a bit of difficulty getting to the scene as the roads weren’t plowed.

However, he said the city sent out two plows and the homeowner had a plow on his truck and helped the effort as well.

“It was an extra hard night,” Hiscock said of his colleagues’ challenges.

After the fire had already started the power wires going into the house shorted out, causing them to arc, Hiscock said.

Besides the road, the plows had to clear access to a fire hydrant so the tanker truck could shuttle water to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
