ST. LAWRENCE, N.L. — The Town of St. Lawrence and one family, in particular, is reeling following a tragedy that claimed the lives of three men.
The bodies of Ed Norman, 67, his son Scott, 35, and his nephew Jody, 42, have been recovered off the province's south coast following a marine accident that occurred after the men, along with an Isaac Kettle left the Burin Peninsula community's harbour at 12:30 a.m. Monday.
Kettle, thought to be in his early 30s, is still missing and search and rescue efforts to locate him are continuing. Those efforts are being supported by the Canadian Coast Guard auxiliary as well as a search and rescue Hercules out of Halifax.
The identities of the deceased were confirmed by Eileen Norman, Ed's sister-in-law.
According to Eileen Norman, one of her family members was found this morning, another was located at 11:30 a.m. and the third was found just after 1 p.m. She did not disclose the order in which they were located.
More details to come.
EARLIER STORY
The body of a St. Lawrence fisherman has been recovered off the south coast of the province.
“We’re in complete shock,” St. Lawrence’s assistant town clerk Eileen Norman told The Telegram this morning.
She said the man found dead was one of four fishermen who went missing early Monday morning.
She said they left St. Lawrence to go crab fishing at 12:30 a.m. Monday morning and when they didn’t return hours later, several other fishermen from the community, as well as the Canadian Coast Guard auxiliary set out to look for them. A Hercules search and rescue aircraft from Halifax was also involved in the search, she said.
“We were watching all night and the Hercules would set off a flare for light,” she said. “We were so worried the whole morning. It was way too long for them to be gone.”
The man’s body was discovered just after 5 a.m. this morning, Norman said.
“It’s devastating,” she said. “Between the phone here at the town and my (personal) phone, it hasn’t stopped. People wondering what happened.”
She wouldn’t say the man’s name, but said she was related to three of the four men.
Her brother-in-law, Ed Norman, 67, went out in a 36-foot fishing boat with his son, Scott Norman, 35, and nephew, Jody Norman, 42. The other man, Isaac Kettle, is a friend in his early 30s, she said.
Norman said they’re praying the others will be found safe and sound.
