UPDATE:

An off-duty RCMP officer subdued one of two bank robbery suspects Friday night when the man, 31-year-old Adam Hayden, allegedly tried to carjack his vehicle on Kenmount Road according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC). A responding RNC officer then took Hayden into custody.

The second suspect, 33-year-old Travis Wade, was apprehended immediately after the two perpetrators crashed their pickup on O’Leary Avenue in an attempt to flee the scene on snow-covered roads.

Adam Hayden, 31, appeared in provincial court in St. John's Saturday morning to hear the charges against him.

The RNC say Hayden, from Conception Harbour, and Wade, from St. John’s, allegedly entered the bank with a firearm and demanded cash. One of them discharged the firearm but there were no injuries.

Neither the RCMP officer nor his passenger were injured in the incident.

Wade is charged with: armed robbery, forcible confinement, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, disguise with intent, assault with a weapon (court documents indicate the weapon allegedly used was a knife), and failing to comply with court orders.

Hayden is charged with: armed robbery, disguise with intent, failing to comply with a firearm prohibition order, intentionally discharging a firearm, and multiple other firearms related offences, including pointing a firearm at two individuals.

Both Hayden and Wade appeared in provincial court Saturday morning to hear their charges. They are scheduled to be back in court Monday morning for a bail hearing.

Wade has a lengthy history of armed robbery and assault, among other convictions. Among the convictions is an armed robbery of an Ultramar gas station in Conception Bay South in 2010. He slammed a hammer on the counter and demanded money and cigarettes, making off with $199 and 25 packages of cigarettes.

Hayden was previously convicted for his role in a hostage taking at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in 2013, in which he and other inmates took an inmate hostage in exchange for cigarettes. In 2015, Hayden was charged with break and enter and attempted robbery in a Springdale Street home invasion.
