UPDATE: Man, 61, dies in workplace incident, police confirm

Police have confirmed that a 61-year-old man died as a result of a workplace incident in St. John's Friday morning.

The RNC major crimes unit is investigating the fatality, which happened just before 7:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, it was determined the man had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

While police are not releasing details, The Telegram has learned it happened at Weir’s Construction off Peacekeepers Way.

When the Telegram arrived on scene Friday morning, personnel from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, Eastern Health and the RNC were spotted at the business near several pieces of heavy equipment in a gravel pit.

“The RNC sends condolences to all family, friends and co-workers of the deceased,” an RNC news release, issued just before 1 p.m. Friday stated.

The RNC major crimes unit, forensic identification section and mobile crisis response team attended the scene and the investigation remains active.

The RNC is working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

The call came in just after 7 a.m. and when the Telegram arrived on scene, personnel from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, Eastern Health and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary were spotted on scene near several pieces of heavy equipment in a gravel pit.

An RNC forensic identification services vehicle was later seen arriving on the grounds of the construction company.
