Just a week after Health Minister Dr. John Haggie ordered an external review of Central Health, the board of the health authority confirms that its president and CEO has resigned.

A news release issued by Central Health this morning said no further comment will be provided.

The Department of Health and Community Services said an interim CEO will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Recruitment for a new CEO will be completed through the legislated merit-based appointment process by the Independent Appointments Commission,” the statement said.

Haggie said Goodyear’s resignation will have no bearing on the direction and outcome of the external review being carried out by Dr. Peter Vaughn.

In the coming weeks, Vaughn was supposed to be meeting with the regional health authority’s CEO, board chair and Haggie.

This process will continue without Goodyear, Haggie said.

“The review was never about one particular individual,” the minister said. “So, the short answer is it will have no effect on the review.”

He said the focus is on putting Central Health back on “cohesive footing” in providing health care for the people of Central Newfoundland.

Haggie hopes the outcome will serve the new CEO well.
