ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Two people are dead following a multi-vehicle collision in St. John’s Monday night.
Several witnesses told the Telegram it appeared a large SUV crashed, at very high speed, into the rear of several other vehicles, including one motorcycle.
Another witness said the same vehicle passed her car eastbound at a high rate of speed just before the crash occurred, driving onto a sidewalk to get past and it had at least one door open. She said she then saw the SUV approach the stopped vehicles at the Topsail Road and Hamlyn Road intersection. It then disappeared into a cloud of smoke and debris as it struck the unsuspecting vehicles stopped at a red light.

When the Telegram arrived on scene, first responders were attending to the two victims. Officials confirmed later that the two had succumbed to their injuries on scene.
Police closed the whole intersection and a part of Topsail Road all the way back to Brookfield road to investigate the incident.
The area was expected to be closed for several hours to facilitate the investigation.

Two people are dead following a collision involving at least one motorcycle and multiple cars shortly after 8 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Topsail and Hamlyn roads in St. John’s.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were quickly on the scene, which was closed to other traffic as first responders secured the area and moved to help the injured.
No information was available about the number of people involved or the nature of any injuries however, officials on the scene did confirm two fatalities.
