Police say they have arrested and charged a 24-year-old man in connection with an assault on Groves Road in St. John’s on Sunday.

Tyler Collins made a brief appearance in court Monday morning in a white jumpsuit and he was sent for a seven-day psychiatric assessment.

Just before 6:30 a.m. Sunday, officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s (RNC) patrol services, criminal investigation division and forensic identification services responded to a residence on Groves Road after a report of assault with a weapon.

A spokesperson with the RNC confirmed with The Telegram by phone that the man was stabbed.

In a news release issued Monday afternoon, RNC reported a 54-year-old man sustained non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to hospital for treatment.

Police said the 24-year-old man was arrested at the scene. He’s charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

The accused and the victim are known to one another and investigators do not believe this to be a random act of violence.
