A news release issued by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Saturday shortly after 3 p.m. provided details about the incident in Conception Bay South that saw a section of Bayview Heights closed.

Just before 4 a.m., RNC officers with patrol services, forensive identification, criminal investigation, police dog services, tactics and rescue, and explosive disposal units, as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police explosives disposal unit, responded to the Bayview Heights area.

EARLIER STORY:

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) officers have blocked off a section of Bayview Heights in Conception Bay South in what appears to be a standoff.

Police are using a loudspeaker to ask someone inside a home in the area to answer their phone.

Ambulance and Rovers Ground Search and Rescue are also on the scene. Around 12:30 p.m., Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) also arrived to assist with the ongoing situation.

Police are asking the public to stay away from the area for safety reasons. Some people who live on the closed-off section of the street were seen outside their homes, but police are reminding anyone who lives in the neighbourhood to please stay inside and avoid the area.

RNC spokesperson Cst. James Cadigan was mum on details but did say police were responding to a request for police assistance. He did not provide any details about the person inside the home.

The Telegram’s Keith Gosse is on the scene and will provide further details as they become available.
