Three people died in a house fire Thursday evening in Conception Bay South (C.B.S.), police confirmed on Friday at noon.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is investigating the cause of the fire with the assistance of the fire commissioner.

According to the C.B.S. Fire Department, the Emerald Creek Drive home, off Foxtrap Access Road, was completely destroyed.

Fire department Captain Fred Kennedy said he was first on the scene at around 5:45 p.m., and by then, the house was already fully engulfed with flames. He said he wasn’t sure for how long it was burning prior to his arrival.

Kennedy said it took three fire engines and two utility vehicles roughly 10 minutes to get the blaze under control.

“Subsequent to fire suppression, the remains of three occupants of the home were located and removed from the scene,” reads a news release from the RNC.

Police said their remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in order to determine the cause of death.

The fire investigator is asking anyone with information pertaining to the fire to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Two homes, one of each side of the burning house, were damaged by the fire. Kennedy said siding was melted and windows were cracked.

Earlier story:

A fire Thursday evening on Emerald Creek Drive, off Foxtrap Access Road in Conception Bay South (C.B.S.) completely destroyed a home.

At press time Thursday evening, neither the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) nor the C.B.S. Fire Department could say whether anyone was inside the home.

Fire department Captain Fred Kennedy said it was “undetermined” if there were people inside the home, and deferred further comment on the possibility of people being inside to the RNC.

He said he was first on the scene at around 5:45 p.m., and by then, the house was fully engulfed with flames. He said he wasn’t sure for how long it was burning prior to his arrival.

Kennedy said it took three fire engines and two utility vehicles roughly 10 minutes to get the blaze under control.

As of 9 p.m. Thursday evening, Kennedy said the fire was out, and the scene turned over to the RNC for investigation.

RNC spokesperson Cst. James Cadigan told The Telegram it was still early in the investigation. All he could say shortly after 9 p.m. was that there were officers on scene and the fire investigator was involved, but otherwise he could not provide any additional information at press time.

Meanwhile, Kennedy said there were still five people from the fire department on scene as of press time, and he estimated the RNC had about 10 people on scene.

Two homes, one of each side of the burning house, were damaged by the fire. Kennedy said siding was melted and windows were cracked.
