ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Incoming premier Andrew Furey received close to double the number of votes as his opponent John Abbott in the 2020 Liberal leadership race.
The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador has released a breakdown of vote totals in each district in the province.
Furey received a total of 13,645 votes to Abbott’s 7,537. A total number of 21,182 votes were cast, with almost 34,000 voters registered for the race, the party said.
Furey beat Abbott in all 40 districts, with Abbott's best results in metro-area ridings. The points system used to determine the winner saw each district given a value of 1,000 points. The percentage vote total dictated the number of points assigned to Furey or Abbott.
“Congratulations to Mr. Abbott for putting his name forward and running in the 2020 Liberal leadership election. We wish to also congratulate our new leader and premier-designate, Dr. Andrew Furey, on his election success and we look forward to working with him,” reads a statement from the party.
