WHITBOURNE, N.L.

An inmate at the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Centre in Whitbourne is facing charges after allegedly attacking an employee at the facility with a broken pen.

According to a RCMP release, police in Whitbourne received a call from the centre about the incident around 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

The youth was restrained and placed in a cell, the release indicated, while the male employee was immediately brought to the clinic in Whitbourne where he was treated for his injuries.

Officers from both the Whitbourne and Placentia RCMP detachments conducted an investigation at the facility and made sure the youth no longer had any weapons. The youth was moved to a secure unit.

Charges against the youth will include assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and breach of a youth criminal justice act probation, the release stated.

According to sources within the prison system, the male youth stabbed the correctional officer three times in the head and the officer required staples.
