A wind-blown gate came very close to causing a serious injury at about 2:30 Sunday afternoon when it crashed through the windshield of a passing car.
An official on scene said the young female driver got more of a fright than injuries when high winds suddenly blew the open gate into the path of her car. It slammed into the passenger side of the vehicle all the way to the passenger seat, causing extensive damage to the car. It appeared the gate had been secured in an open position but knocked loose by the high winds that were battering the island Sunday.
The official added the driver was the only occupant and that it could have been much worse had there been someone sitting in the passenger seat.
The gate is located between O’Donel high school on Ruth Avenue and St. Peter’s elementary on Ashford Drive.
The driver was the only person in the car. She was checked by Eastern Health paramedics and released.
