A wind storm hit the Avalon Peninsula area of the province Friday night just hours after the election was called.

It was already snowing and slightly blustery with slippery roads when Premier Andrew Furey announced, in time for the supper hour television news, that the election day will be Saturday, Feb. 13.

SaltWire Network meteorologist Cindy Day said wind warnings for southeastern Newfoundland should end by midday Saturday.

“Wind warnings are in place for the eastern portion of the Avalon Peninsula up to St. John’s,” Day said. “North winds by midnight gusting close to 90 km/h to 100 km/h at the water’s edge.

“The wind should start to drop off to about 60 km/h to 70 km/h early morning and the wind warning should be lifted by the noon hour.”

Will stormy weather is expected to hit the maritimes, most of Newfoundland and Labrador should see mild and cloudy remainder of Saturday and into Sunday, with some rain and fog for Sunday evening.
