With the Royal St. John’s Regatta cancelled due to COVID-19, St. John’s city council is seeking the province’s approval to shift the holiday to Aug. 3 this year, creating a long weekend for the first week of August.

Mayor Danny Breen said during the regular meeting of council on Monday that city legislation doesn’t specify a day for the Regatta Day holiday, and so it was council’s wish that for 2020 that holiday be the first Monday in August.

Breen said the city will write the minister of Municipal Affairs for approval of the plan. He said the city will make an official announcement when it receives word from the province that the change is approved.

Breen said he doesn’t anticipate the province will have any issues with the change.
