A 26-year-old man charged in connection with a 10-hour standoff with police in C.B.S. last weekend has agreed to remain in custody for now.
James Christopher Tyson, 26, appeared in court Wednesday, when the Crown indicated it was opposed to his release. He’ll be back before a judge Feb. 7.
Tyson was arrested around 2 p.m. Saturday at a home in the Bayview Heights area of C.B.S., in which he had allegedly barricaded himself with a weapon.
Police received reports of a man in distress inside the home around 4 a.m., and members of the RNC’s patrol, forensic identification, criminal investigation, K9, tactical and rescue and explosive disposal units were dispatched to the scene. Members of the RCMP’s explosive disposal unit also attended.
Police advised neighbours to remain inside their homes as things unfolded, and employed a surveillance drone and a robot over the course of the standoff. At one point, officers were seen using a loudspeaker to tell someone to answer their phone.
Police say Tyson eventually came peacefully into custody.
Tyson has been charged with two counts of carelessly using a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm while prohibited and breaching court orders in relation to the standoff. At the time of his arrest he was wanted on a number of warrants, and has thus also been charged with more court order breaches, three assaults, operating a vehicle with no valid licence, driving an unregistered vehicle  and failing to appear for a scheduled court date.
