ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The man arrested after human remains were stolen from a grave in Conception Bay South has entered a guilty plea in relation to the incident.
When Lucas Dawe appeared in provincial court in St. John’s this morning, he was supposed to be sentenced for three unrelated thefts. Instead, his lawyer Ken Hollett told Judge Colin Flynn that Dawe is pleading guilty to interfering and/or performing an indignity to a human dead body or human remains.
A sentencing hearing to deal with that charge, as well as the three counts of theft, has been scheduled for June 19.
The human remains — which were stolen from a grave at All Saints Parish in Foxtrap and reportedly date back to the 1800d — were located along the T’Railway, near Foxtrap, around 1 a.m. on April 6, after police responded to a call for service in the area.
Dawe was arrested after he reportedly attempted to boil the bones and drink the water, sources told The Telegram. Sources also say a witness allegedly saw Dawe licking the bones.
The 20-year-old had originally been charged with possessing property stolen (the remains), but Crown prosecutor Jessica Gallant agreed to withdraw that count in exchange for the guilty plea on the other charge.
The crime allegedly occurred between Nov. 5, 2017, and April 5 of this year, but further details will be presented during the sentencing hearing.
