GANDER, N.L. – Medical emergencies saw two international flights diverted to Gander International Airport during the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 26.

Gander International Airport Authority president and CEO Reg Wright said both planes – one from British Airways and the other from Norwegian Air – arrived in Gander within 20 minutes of each other.

There were nearly 500 passengers and crew between the two aircraft.

While the Gander airport does see diversions, Wright said it’s uncommon to have two medical diversions.

“It doesn’t happen regularly that’s for sure,” he said.

There was also a report of an unruly passenger onboard one of the flights. Wright said the matter has been turned over to the RCMP.

The Gander RCMP detachment did not respond to the Beacon’s interview request before deadline.

Meanwhile, Wright said the medical cases have been cleared and departing flights are scheduled for 9:45 p.m. tonight, June 26 and 2 a.m. Wednesday, June 27.
