N.L. and Ottawa investing $6M in affordable housing projects

A line in the provincial budget supplement needs to be clarified about housing

The federal and provincial governments are teaming up to invest $6 million towards the construction of 93 affordable housing units throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ten private and three non-profit sector groups are developing the units, which include 13 fully accessible spaces.

“These new projects will provide persons with disabilities, families, single individuals and independent seniors greater opportunity to find the right housing for their needs,” Lisa Dempster, the province’s minister responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation stated in a news release.

Among the non-profits to receive investment is Channel-Port Aux Basques Gateway Village Corporation, which will use $1 million to build eight units.

“There are many interested and eligible applicants with low incomes who will be excited to hear that affordable rental units will be available in the near future,” stated corporation chairperson Melvin Keeping.

Other non-profits also receiving $1 million for eight unit jobs are Mount Pearl’s Masonic Park and Gander’s Evangel Pentecostal Church.

• Scott’s Construction Ltd., Conception Bay South: $200,000, 5 units

• Talamh an Eisc. Const. Controls Inc., Bonavista: $240,000, 6 units

• KMR Transport Ltd., Fogo Island: $320,000, 8 units

• Spruce Ridge Properties Ltd., Port Blandford: $240,000, 6 units

• Triple A Investments Ltd., Grand Falls-Windsor: $320,000, 8 units

• Peter Farr Holdings Ltd., Summeford: $320,000, 8 units

• JMAK Holdings Ltd., Happy Valley-Goose Bay: $440,000, 8 units

• C&T Enterprises Ltd., Forteau: $440,000, 8 units

• Grand Fairways Resort Inc., Burin: $240,000, 6 units
