HOLYROOD, N.L. — Wildlife officials are asking the public in the Salmonier Nature Park area to be on the lookout for an escaped Canada lynx.
The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture says the was able to escape when a fallen tree damaged its enclosure. Staff and conservation officers believe the cat is still within the park's boundaries and are working to capture it.
In the meantime, while the lynx is not considered a threat to the public and is more likely to avoid human interaction, officials are advising nearby residents to exercise caution, to ensure children and pets are not left unattended outside, and to secure any food or garbage around their properties.
Sightings can be reported to Salmonier Nature Park at 709-229-7888, or the Paddy’s Pond Forestry and Wildlife Office at 709-729-4180, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or 709-685-7273 after hours.
