The man charged with attempted armed robbery of a Scotiabank branch in St. John’s Tuesday morning was innovative to say the least.
The 26-year-old, who was expected to appear in provincial court in St. John’s Wednesday morning, had taken a truck out from a local dealership for a test drive. Little did they know, he would be using it for a bank robbery.

The accused entered the Scotiabank branch at Torbay Road Plaza at approximately 11:30 a.m. brandishing a weapon — a baseball bat — and demanding cash from staff at the bank. He was able to flee the scene with a small quantity of cash.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said the man was arrested in the Military Road area of St. John’s without incident about an hour after the incident occurred. The vehicle was recovered in another location.

Police interviewed him Tuesday afternoon and eventually charged him with armed robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence.
