LABRADOR CITY, N.L. — The United Steelworkers (USW) union announced on Oct. 4 the Amarack employees in Labrador City have voted to join the union.
According to the union, the approximately 60 Labrador City workers are employed by Aramark Quebec, under a contract with IOC to provide services at a fly-in camp and about 30 residences owned by IOC.
USW said in a release the employees have been attempting to join the union since March but were delayed as “Aramark attempted – unsuccessfully – to have numerous employees excluded from union membership.”
The employees voted on whether to join the union this week and were successful.
Marty Warren, USW Director for Atlantic Canada and Ontario, said they are proud to welcome these employees as the newest members of the union.
"The determination that they displayed by sticking together and standing up for their right to join a union is a powerful demonstration of the meaning of solidarity," Warren said in the release.
Warren said they will support the workers “every step of the way as they move forward and prepare to negotiate a collective agreement that recognizes their vital contributions to the success of their employer."
