HOLYROOD, N.L. — A 62-year-old man from Avondale was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after allegedly shooting on a residential property a cat on May 16

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they received a report that a cat was injured by a suspected shotgun wound.

Police say the cat was taken to a vet for medical attention but, due to the extent of its injuries, had to be euthanized. The Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer has been engaged who will conduct a post mortem examination.

The accused was released from police custody on a number of conditions. He is set to attend court on September 16, 2020.

The RCMP says the investigation is continuing with more charges expected.
