A wrap-up of the events that led to Carbonear mayor Frank Butt regaining his seat on council is what stood out for me among stories written throughout the year.
Having been in the council chambers the night they announced Butt had been removed from the mayor’s chair, following the story’s progress over the span of over half a year was exciting.
The uproar from the community made it so that any story written about the subject was no doubt going to be a hit, and seeing firsthand how the chambers went from a few people at every council meeting, to a packed gallery, was interesting.
Once all was said and done, and Butt was mayor once more, I caught up with him to talk about how the experience had shaped him as a mayor, and was pleasantly surprised to see that he was not holding a grudge against council or any of the decision makers along the way. Instead, he was simply eager to get back to his mayoral duties, speaking highly of the town’s future that he once again had a hand in guiding.
The story started with an angry community with no proper mayor, and ended with a happier town that got the mayor back they had originally voted in.
