CORNER BROOK, N.L. — The case of the former Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association employee charged with theft and fraud was called for the first time in provincial court in Corner Brook Tuesday morning.

Melissa Williams, 46, was not present for the proceedings. She was represented by lawyer Marianne Rennie, who appeared via teleconference on behalf of defence counsel Rosellen Sullivan from St. John's.

Rennie indicated the defence had received disclosure from the Crown, but had not yet reviewed the disclosure with Williams. The case was set over until March 31 to allow time for those discussions to take place.

Williams has been charged with six offences, including single counts of theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000, false pretenses and unauthorized use of a credit card, along with two counts of uttering a forged document.

The Crown has elected to proceed by indictment.

Williams served as the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association’s treasurer for the 2018-19 season. She had also served as administrator during this period.

Information filed with the courts allege Williams stole money from the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association between Feb. 10, 2018 and March 8, 2019; defrauded the association of money and obtaining money by false pretense between Nov. 10, 2017 and Feb. 15, 2019; uttered a forged cheque between Nov. 10, 2017 and Feb. 15, 2019, unlawfully causing the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce to act upon the documents as if they were genuine; and uttered a forged cheque between June 20-21, 2018, unlawfully causing the Eagle River Credit Union to act upon the documents as if they were genuine.

With regard to the unauthorized use of a credit card, the court information alleges Williams used a card belonging to the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association between Dec. 13, 2018 and March 8, 2019.

The information sworn at provincial court does indicate any precise amounts of money involved in the allegations against Williams.
