CLARENVILLE, N.L. — Quite a number of tickets were issued in the final quarter of 2019 in Clarenville, as the municipal enforcement officer handed out reprimands in the busy shopping season of the year.

At the council meeting on Jan. 14, the public works and planning committee report included the municipal enforcement officer’s status report for the period of Oct. 1-Dec 31, 2019.

There were 38, traffic and parking-type tickets issued, as well as an additional 44 tickets pertaining to property-related issues.

The official breakdown is as follows:

• Parking in fire lanes – 21;

• Parking on sidewalk – 8;

• Parked between no parking signs – 2;

• Winter parking ban violations – 7;

• 25 tickets for property related issues;

• 12 tickets for curbside garbage issues;

• and seven tickets for renovations without a permit.

There were also four warnings issued for cars parked in the disabled parking space which didn’t have their permit displayed properly.

Public works chair and deputy mayor Heber Smith said at the council meeting the amount of tickets issued increased overall, with the amount of infractions for parking in a fire lane jumping by nine. He added the number of tickets for parking on the sidewalk doubled from the third to fourth quarters of the year.

“They’re still not getting the message,” he said.

He also reminded residents to adhere to the parking ban in the winter — especially with plenty of snowfall through the season.

Regarding residents incurring penalties with garbage collection, he says people must cover their trash bags and recycling, or be “tagged.” If they don’t cover garbage, it causes a litter issue throughout the community when the birds pick it apart.
