Join Memorial University's Gender and Politics Lab in a discussion regarding women's role in municipal politics in Newfoundland and Labrador. The aim of the conference is to bring together elected officials, local stakeholders and representatives from civil society to discuss women’s presence at the municipal level, the challenges (and potential advantages) they face in elections and in municipal government, and the future of women in municipal government across Newfoundland and Labrador. Great Big Book Sale
Canadian Federation of University Women St. John’s is collecting gently used books every day until March 30. Please drop off at the site of the former TD Bank in Woodgate Plaza, 58 Kenmount Rd., between Toys R Us and Quizno’s Sub. Dropoff hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 1-3 p.m. on Sundays. We will accept all types of books, in good condition, except encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest condensed books, textbooks, magazines and outdated technology manuals. We also no longer accept VHS tapes. Our 2019 sale is scheduled for May 6-8 at the Remax Centre (St. John’s Curling Club).

Beginners’ Ukulele Practice Session
Ever thought about learning to play the ukulele? If so, come join a weekly practice session of people of all ages who are learning to play the ukulele. It's not too late to begin. If you don't have a ukulele, the A.C. Hunter Public Library's Musical Lending Library has some to borrow. This practice session is for any beginner of any age. Epilepsy Public Forum
Memorial University medical students will host an epilepsy public forum from noon-5 p.m. Saturday in Room 1M01, Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University. Registration is free and open to all: people living with epilepsy, their friends or families, people interested in medicine and people who want to learn more about the illness. The event is meant to bring together people living with epilepsy, their families, the public, health professionals and medical students to better understand epilepsy from different perspectives. Presentations will include an introduction to epilepsy, patient experiences, seizure first aid, anatomy of the brain, explanations of EEG and current research in epilepsy and more. Placentia Bay Matinee
A special day is planned for Sunday, April 7 at Oderin Hall at the Trinity Pub on George Street to celebrate the talent the Placentia Bay area has churned out over the decades, and highlight the heritage of the area. The show will take place early in the day, from 1-5 p.m., so you still can have a chance to go to Nan's for Sunday supper. Performers from all around Placentia Bay will take part in the matinee, with music by Placentia's Larry Foley & Mock Greene, East Isle Wind (from Little Bona), Kevin Hartley & Whisky in the Shade (from Dunville), and Kevin Pomeroy and friends (Merasheen). There will be a special reading by poet Agnes Walsh (from Placentia), with stories and Oderin Hall dedication by Gordon Lake. Freshwater's award-winning singer/songwriter and broadcaster, Colleen Power, will host the event. Tickets are $15. Pre-sales start on Monday, March 18 at The Trinity Pub.
