Coffee & Culture – Artist Talk with Pepa Chan
Hear from Pepa Chan in this Coffee & Culture – Artist Talk at The Rooms. Originally from Buenos Aires, Pepa Chan is an interdisciplinary artist, art educator and musician currently based in St. John's. Her art practice includes site-specific installation, sculpture, printmaking, performance and video to generate difficult questions about society, gender and violence. During her Elbow Room Residency, Chan produced a series of objects and images confronting a particularly traumatic period of her life that is remembered through the act of getting her hair brushed. This research and work has resulted in the solo exhibition “Brush,” on view through April 14. Find out more about this research and how a simple communal gesture of care and trust can enact incremental healing, in addition to a view of the artist’s earlier projects.

Wind’s fantastic dream world bleeds into his haunting reality, as he’s preyed on by the Trickster through the hallways at school, the abandoned motel he loves more than home, and his own fragile psyche. Ancestral history combines with harsh reality and gas-induced hallucination in a tale of family, love, despair and the possibility of redemption. Presented by Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland. The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival presents Newfoundland and Labrador premiere of critically acclaimed film “Firecrackers” by Jasmin Mozaffari at The Rooms as part of the festival’s Scene and Heard series. The much-buzzed-about debut feature pairs remarkable talents, Toronto International Film Festival Rising Star Michaela Kurimsky and award-winning music video director and actor Karena Evans, as two friends faced with a devastating threat to their relationship as well as their freedom. Created with an almost entirely female key crew, “Firecrackers” portrays a powerful, female-driven narrative about friendship, independence and resilience. Globe and Mail Current Canadian Screen Awards Best Director nominee Mozaffari will take part in a Q&A after the screening.
