CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Partners involved with developing a new regional aquatic centre for Corner Brook have an idea what needs to be built.

Now they have to figure out how it will be funded, says Corner Brook Mayor Jim Parsons.

The city has applied for funding through the federal-provincial Investing in Canada infrastructure funding program. The partners are pitching a plan to revitalize the swimming pool at Grenfell Campus.

Parsons wouldn’t provide specifics on what the centre will look like, or include. He said the vision could change, depending on if and how much funding is secured.

He confirmed the plan still involves utilizing the wing housing the pool and gymnasium at Grenfell as part of a bigger, new facility.

Parsons doesn’t expect to hear anything on the funding application until early in the new year.

“It is quite a significant process,” he said.

The projects submitted have to be evaluated and scored by the Department of Municipal Affairs for the province and then by the federal government to make sure they fit criteria.

In addition to Corner Brook, the aquatic centre partners include Mount Moriah, Massey Drive, Steady Brook, YMCA of Western Newfoundland, Humber Community, the Corner Brook Rapids Swim Club and Grenfell Campus.
