BONAVISTA, N.L. — After some delays which saw the scope of the project expanded, the tender for renovation work on the Bonavista Hospital is expected to be awarded in a week to 10 days.
In a statement Eastern Health, said the project was expanded to enhance space in the hospital's new emergency department.
This required additional planning and engineering, resulting in delays within the design phase, beyond initial estimates.
Work was originally expected to begin in summer 2019.
“The project is anticipated to result in a more functional emergency department,” reads the statement from Eastern Health.
Tenders for the work closed in late 2019.
“Eastern Health is currently evaluating bid packages and is planning to award the project upon completion of the evaluation. Once the project is awarded, construction is anticipated to take approximately one year.”
Bonavista Mayor John Norman told The Packet on Monday, Feb. 3, he had just had a call on the hospital progress that day.
He says some of the changes of scope were changes with laundry services.
Norman says they decided to relocate laundry from the hospital to the Golden Heights Manor long-term care facility, while expanding the services in that building.
“It would open up more space to expand the E.R. plan,” the mayor said. “That increase in cost, I know, was in the hundreds of thousands. That was all approved and the tender went out with those changes included.”
