The trial of Ian Kaulback, a former police officer charged with child luring, continued in Happy Valley-Goose Bay provincial court last week.
Three days were set aside to hear witness Dean Boyer speak. Boyer is a forensic expert who works with the integrated child exploitation unit, a joint RCMP and RNC operation. Boyer spoke about how police used forensic technology to analyze Kaulbacks computer and Facebook account.
The case has been set over to Feb. 11 to hear submissions from Kaulback’s lawyer, Jason Edwards and the Crown.
All witnesses have now been called in the case, which originally began in 2013.
Kaulback, an RCMP officer stationed in Hopedale at the time, was arrested for alleged child luring Feb. 8, 2013. He pleaded not guilty and was charged with a second count of child luring July 9, 2014.
The charges against Kaulback had been stayed when a judge ruled his Charter rights had been violated. That ruling was unanimously overturned by the Court of Appeal in February of 2018 and Kaulback was ordered to stand trial.
The court heard five days of testimony in mid-August, including one of the alleged victims, a young girl who said she had chatted with Kaulback on Facebook.
