A campaign to put a StarDisc in Gander is officially underway.
Chris Spencer, a resident of the United Kingdom, is the man behind the effort. He was a temporary resident of Gander in the days following 9/11 when the plane on which he was a passenger was diverted there from its original New York destination.
StarDiscs are contemporary illuminated stone circles created by artist Aidan Shingler, which feature a star chart carved in granite in a range of sizes. Shingler designed the original StarDisc located in Wirksworth, England.
Spencer is working with the artist on a design for the local memorial. He hopes to crowdfund the 200,000 pounds ($346,008 Cdn.) to put the disc in Gander.
Spencer recently released a YouTube video telling his story and giving reasons why he wants to give back to the town that took him in and showed him kindness in September 2001.
A Facebook group has been started and the crowdfunding initiative has raised just over 383 pounds towards the project.
A media campaign in the United Kingdom is expected to begin soon.
