GANDER, N.L. — Melissa Francis is looking to add a bit of colour to Gander’s scenery.
The Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation artist recently brought forward a proposal for a mural project – approximately 25 x 15 – at the town square. Having worked at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in the past and taken part in the Global Mural Arts Conference in Botwood last year, Francis felt it was a great concept to help highlight the town’s history.
At the Feb. 6 meeting of council, it was noted there is an interest for a mural project but there is no budget for it. Other challenges, such as obtaining permission from the property owner, liability and occupational health and safety would have to be looked into as well.
But there are funds for the painting of the town’s traffic control boxes and the concept of transparent wraps, containing art, is being discussed.
Francis said the feedback from the town has been positive, and she would be interested in pursuing the painted control boxes if that is the route council chooses.
