MARYSTOWN, N.L. — As a woman from the Burin Peninsula in a leadership role, an upcoming event in Marystown is well-suited to Status of Women Minister Carol Anne Haley.

Haley, MHA for Burin-Grand Bank, is co-hosting a women’s leadership forum at the Marystown Hotel and Convention Centre, along with Premier Dwight Ball, on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

“It’s exciting for me,” Haley told SaltWire NetWork on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

“This event is part of a commitment the premier made when he strengthened the mandate of the Office of the Status of Women back in February of 2019.”

Haley said the free event will give women an opportunity to hear other female leaders talk about their journeys and the lessons they’ve learned.

The full list of speakers is still being finalized, but Susan Murray, a leadership specialist, will give the keynote address, Haley said.

“We’ll have a mix of women from the Burin Peninsula and, of course, other parts of the province, as well,” she said of the presenters.

This will be the third event of its kind, with past forums taking place in St. John’s and Corner Brook in 2019. After Marystown, one is being planned for the central region. A Labrador conference is also on the agenda.

Haley said the two previous forums have been well attended. The Marystown event has 120 seats available, but they were quickly filling up, she said. Those interested in attending can inquire via email at [email protected] by no later than Tuesday, Feb. 11.

“When we all come together like this, it motivates us, and I think when others see women who are now leaders, it motivates them to move forward,” Haley said.
