Kathy Crewe wasn’t about to let her piano and guitar students lapse in their musical studies.
As activities in her hometown of Glovertown continued to be suspended as officials enact preventative measures in the wake of the COVID-19 virus, Crewe was already looking at suspending lessons.
Her decision was made easier when the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) closed schools across the province to prevent potential spread of the disease.
She now has plans to publish a series of videos she hopes will help her 20 students continue their lessons from home.
"I’m really glad I went ahead and stopped lessons,“ she said. “No one would feel like they had to come (for in-person lessons).”
With the help of her youngest daughter, Crewe plans to run through some piano scales before moving onto chords and songs.
Her oldest son will help publish the videos online once they have been recorded.
She will be posting these videos on a newly created Facebook page called Kathy’s Piano Page.
For her students, it is a way for them to stay busy as many other activities have been shut down or are in the stages of shutting down.
Things like minor hockey and figure skating are already cancelled.
Crewe says her students will now have something to do in the hours that are normally reserved for school.
“I’m excited to give it a go,” she said. “(The students) are going to have more time to practice and I can still be there for them.”
