GREAT NORTHERN PENINSULA, N.L. — Local adventurers and tourists can now enjoy the views offered along the newly completed Iceberg Trail on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula.
St. Anthony Basin Resources Inc. (SABRI) finished work on the 33-kilometre trail, from L’Anse aux Meadows to St. Lunaire-Griquet, earlier this month.
The primary objective of the project was to construct new sections to connect the seven pre-existing trails in the region.
In addition, existing areas were widened and upgraded.
The three-year project came at a price tag of $350,110.
It was cost-shared between SABRI (23.5%), ACOA (47.1%) and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation (29.4%).
SABRI oversaw the project with four employees.
SABRI executive director Sam Elliott says their objective was to find the best route along the coastline, so hikers could enjoy the ocean and all its wonders — including icebergs and whales.
The project, he says, it was conducted at the request of the business community in the L’Anse aux Meadows to St. Lunaire-Griquet area.
The goal was to provide a trail those businesses could market to visitors.
Now that SABRI is finished, it is hoped the business community will take the initiative to administrate and market the trail.
Elliott says SABRI was hired on to build the trail, but not to maintain it.
“We were only the builders,” he told The Northern Pen.
A map of the trail is still to be completed while signage remains to be installed.
