HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. — A Happy Valley-Goose Bay resident got quite the shock while cleaning up his property.
Winston Blake's home is adjacent to the pole line on Mealy Mountain Road. He opened a knapsack his kids and a neighbourhood friend had found the week before and had left untouched.
The bag contained what he thought was marijuana paraphernalia, which he wasn’t too happy with. Turns out it was something far worse.
“I showed it to a buddy of mine who used to work out west and he told me ‘that’s not a weed pipe, that’s crack,’” Blake told the Labrador Voice. “I started to do some research myself online and read about fentanyl, which they’re using to mix that with these days. That stuff could be lethal if you touch it.”
Blake said he’s never seen anything like it in the area of his property before and is concerned with the increase of transients in town, thinking it may be where the items came from. He said he’s seen groups of them near his house recently, which he hasn’t in previous years.
His biggest concern is the potential health impact it could have on people who find it.
“My youngest wanted to open the bag and see what it was,” he said. “I’m really glad he didn’t; God only knows if that was mixed with something like fentanyl.”
Blake said he would like to see educational programs for kids to let them know what to do if they find something like this.
“If this kind of thing is in our town now, people need to know what to do if they find it,” he said. “This stuff could be really dangerous.
Blake contacted the local RCMP detachment to help him dispose of the drugs.
The Labrador Voice contacted local RCMP about the issue and did not receive a response as of press time.
